Textbook publishers revamp ebooks to fight used market

A booming market in recent years for selling and renting used college textbooks has saved students across the United States a ton of cash.

But it has put textbook publishers in a bind. They don’t make a cent unless students buy their books new.

So increasingly, publishers like Pearson Plc and McGraw-Hill Education are turning to a new model: Creating online versions of their texts, often loaded with interactive features, and selling students access codes that expire at semester’s end.

Google enters Digital Textbook World

Google has announced their entrance into the digital textbook market. They will start selling and renting digital textbooks in the Play Store starting in August. Google aims to compete with established players such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple in this exciting yet unpredictable market.

Google says it is working with give major publishers to secure content that will be displayed in Google’s platform. It will be interesting to see whether Google is successful in entering this unknown market – and whether it will be worth the time and resources needed to compete with its formidable competitors.

Samsung Staking out its Role in Digital Education Revolution

After so much success taking on Apple in the smartphone market, Samsung is making its move on challenging Apple in the race for dominance in the digital education market. Samsung School is a new digital technology that uses the Samsung Galaxy Note tablet with teaching software to create a digital learning environment for students.

Kevin Bradbeer, Toronto District School Board program co-ordinator for teaching and learning with technology, says that while Apple has historically been the only option for schools looking to implement this type of service, the Android is now being considered as an alternative digital education platform.

It will be interesting to see whether Samsung is able to break into Apple’s market that way it did with cell phones and tablets.
